The U.S. military and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) have recognized specific illnesses linked to materials found in World War II-era military barracks and bases—most notably asbestos exposure. [1, 2]

Recognized Illnesses from Barracks and Base Exposures

  • Asbestos-Related Diseases: The military and VA recognize and compensate veterans who developed illnesses from asbestos, which was heavily used in insulation, floor tiles, roofing, and construction materials in WWII-era Army and military barracks. Recognized conditions include:
    • Mesothelioma (an aggressive cancer of the lining of the lungs or abdomen)
    • Lung Cancer
    • Asbestosis (chronic lung scarring and breathing impairment) [1, 2]
